Headlight misalignment is common. However, the issue should not go unresolved for too long. Learn how to adjust the headlights here.

This article applies to the Toyota Camry (1997-2011).

As you use your Toyota Camry, your headlights can become misaligned and interfere with your driving ability. While this is a problem in terms of road safety, the repair itself is actually quite simple. So much so, in fact, you can adjust your headlights right there from the safety and security of your own driveway. You won't need specialized tools, and the process takes only about an hour to complete. However, it's important to note: Making sure your headlights are properly aligned and adjusted is a job that you will need to come back to again and again as you rack up more miles on your Camry. Consider it as necessary (and repetitive) as getting your engine oil changed or your tires realigned.

Materials Needed

  • Masking tape
  • Tape measure
  • 8mm box wrench or 8mm socket wrench

Step 1 – Park your vehicle about 25 feet from a flat, vertical surface

It's recommended that you use your garage door or a wall. It's best to complete this project at night when the full intensity of your headlights can be captured against the flat, vertical surface.

Step 2 – Pop the hood of your car

Pop the hood of your car to access the first screw you'll be maneuvering in this step to properly adjust your headlights. This screw is located on the passenger's side of your car, near the windshield washer reservoir. When you move to the driver's side of your vehicle, it will be located just forward of your battery, near your main relay infused panel. Grab your owner's manual if you need additional help in identifying these parts. Otherwise, take your wrench and fit it securely onto the adjustment bolt.

Pro Tip

If your headlights are fitted with two adjustment bolts, you'll need to adjust them both to complete the alignment process for each headlight.

Step 3 – Go clockwise or counterclockwise

Turn the adjustment bolt in a clockwise direction to adjust your headlights in an upward direction, and counterclockwise to adjust them in a downward direction.

Step 4 – Adjust both headlights

Rotate the adjustment bolt on both sides of your Camry until each side is even with the other. In other words, your headlights should produce an even line (or row) of light against the surface of your garage door or a wall. If one side appears higher or lower than the other, make an adjustment as needed. Continue making adjustments until both headlights are evenly aligned.

Step 5 – Check your work

Stand back from your vehicle to check the symmetry and make adjustments. Doing so will ensure your headlights are properly adjusted and ready for nighttime use.
